Future Aspirations 2014

At Pt England School’s intermediate block some very special guests came to visit. They came to speak to us about our future aspirations to help motivate us to pursue our dreams and never give up. Their names are Anthony Samuels, Paula , and Amelia Ngafi.

Just before  they started talking, the host  for the day, Andrew Pattison, showed us a video of a boy just a year older than us who didn’t know he had a talent. But it wasn’t for long. He found his gift in speaking to people. The video was of him telling a whole room of 330 people who he was and where he’s from.

First up was Anthony, he talked about his career working at the New Zealand sunday morning programme What Now and even owning the whole company for about ten years or less. He was particularly aiming to tell us about how he was a normal kid like us, and who would of thought that he would end up owning a company like that.

Next was Paula ( Bowl-la ) , and he was here to tell us an event that happened in his life. It was when he had almost drowned in a swimming race, because he didn’t try to make it to the end without walking with his feet. He almost drowned and an official jumped into the pool to pull him out. His quote was he wasn’t scared that we won’t pursue our dreams, he’s scared the we won’t try.

Last was Amelia and she was here to tell us to tell us to not to let other peoples expectations impact on you. She was a fashion designer in training, she was very good and designing clothes, she even showed us some of her designs.

How to Identify Rip Currents

Here in New Zealand we have the third highest rates of people drowning in the world,
and that's why we need to keep safe in the surf. First i'm gonna tell you how you can be surf safe in the water by giving instructions on how to get out of rips, identify rips, what to do if your in a rip and how to avoid them.

If waves come up onto the shore how do they come out? Rips are formed by the waves that are trying to get back to sea. To get out they find big gaps in the water and escape through there, which creates a massive vacuum that can pull people or any float able item in the gap.

Have you ever wondered how to figure out where and what currents are , and even wondered how to avoid them? The first step to finding and avoiding currents is always try looking for a patch of light coloured water or if your beach black sand then look for darker water. Second step is see if there is just a little patch of really calm smooth going water and you’ll know for its a current.

If you've ever wondered what to do when caught in a rip current then this is for you. First step see if you can stand up. Second step try to float if you don’t have a surfboard or anything with you that can float. Third step don’t swim against the current other wise you’ll have no energy to float if you need to. Last step wait until the you stop moving then try swimming sideways about 30 meters then go straight.

Term 4 Assembly

On day one of term 4 Pt England School had an immersion assembly. Starting at Team 1 and ending with Team 5, the teachers started their items. Team 5 had my favourite item of all.

Starting with the team 5 teacher’s briskly walking onto the stage with their paintbrushes. Next, music started to play as the teachers began to paint on a big board. There was dead silence, the only noise was the music. Projected onto the wall in the background was video of someone drawing a beautiful/ sad woman.

The music stopped, and the paintings were ready and awesome as well. To the left Was Mr Jacobsen, and to the right was Mr Burt, in the middle was Mrs Jarman. It was the shadows and lights ( Stylise( which is a style of painting or drawing)  that made it stand out.

Rimu

One early morning Rimu heard his name being called from outside his window. He lazily flipped over and faced the window. Rimu was still drained. He thought to himself for a bit, wondering why he could hear knocks at his window. Rimu knew it wasn't it wasn't hail because it was the middle of summer. He sat up and dragged himself across the room to the window. Then Rimu saw his friend Ollie standing outside his windows shouting out Rimu"s name. He would of rather had hail.

Soccer

On Monday the 28th of July class 4 attended a soccer lesson with one the best tutors we could ask for. Her name is Sophie and she is from Argentina. She made a deal with us, it was if she teaches us soccer we will teach her English and that we've done so far.

Our first warm up was snatch the bib. The point of the game was to snatch the other person's bib from their side and try to maintain the bib by protecting it from thieves. Ultimately trying keep it until the end of the game. We got to play a second round and this time we were allowed to take more than on bib. It was cool, fun and good exercise.

After the class had been warmed up we got ready for another game and it was even better! It was a like a mixture of midnight and soccer. There was two lines of people on each side of the court, and they were teams of 1-11. I was number 6 with my opponent being my friend Brodie. When Sophie called out one of our numbers we had to run into the middle of the court and try to score a goal.

"Number Six" Sophia shouted ,so I ran up quickly at the same time as Brodie. As Brodie tried to kick the ball I missed the ball and hit him in the shins and he fell over, the ball rolled out and the game was over. My team won the game 8-5, we had a good run and a really hard match. After all I liked playing soccer.

A.F.L

Every Wednesday at 9:40 class 4 has an A.F.L Session with different tutors every week. We learn various skills about the game, like the Drop Punt ( A Kick ),the Ice Cream Cone ( A Pass )and rules like Laces away from faces, and 7 steps only.

So far we have been practicing drills and warm ups for the game. I have been enjoying every session we get because I am learning something that I might be able to pass on to other kids. The drills a hard because we have to get it right and perfect, but its still fun!

My favorite part of A.F.L was learning how to play because when I play I don’t have to ask what to do I just have to do it. Also my favorite tutor for A.F.L was Daniel because he was funny and he taught us a lot.

A Cold Rainy Day

One frosty morning I had no choice but to walk to school. The car was covered in ice and the power lines were down ,so I couldn’t call a taxi. As turn into different streets the wind was blustery and pulling me around. Goosebumps filled my arms and my teeth started to chatter. A voice behind me shouted out “Howard wait up”, but it was too cold so I kept going. As I walked all the way to to Glen Innes my stomach started to rumble and I was hungry. Thinking to myself should I buy something or just leave It, but I couldn’t resist I had to go. When I passed the the shops I dropped in for a pie and ate at school.

Pt England Fia Fia

On Wednesday th 9th of April 2014 Pt England School had there Fia Fia night. A variates  of culture had performed and a band and one drama group, so there was the full package. Over 3 in a half thousand people came to watch on our school field. It was one of the biggest occasion's of the year so far.

I performed in three groups I performed in Kapa Haka, The Band, and A group called Precisely That. First was Kapa Haka, Second Band and third Precisely That. It was a full on night for me I rushed everywhere trying to find where I go next.

Kapa Haka had four Waiata (songs) to perform. Everyone was nervous at first ,but when we got on that stage it was all not really scary, because we couldn't see anything or anyone for that matter. The first three Waiata were soft and soothing. Then the last Waiata ended with a Raging Haka (Maori War Dance).

The Band, played our intro song which we made up it was called Microphone Check. Our name was Red Remix. Second and last song played was called Rude by Magic, which is about a guy who wants to marry a girl ,but her father won't let him till he passes on. WE ARE AWSOME!

Last but not least was Precisely That, is a group of Precision and Precise actions. It was kind of like the army , but for kid. We performed well and got lots of comments from the visitors and fellow students. The group ended in style when we bumped our bums together.

Unfortunately the night came to an end with a booming performance from the Junior Kapa Haka group. Erveryone who came was satisfied with the Mixture of talents and cultures they even volunteered to help clean up after hours. Coming to conclusion was stink ,because we wanted to perform as many times possible.

The Treaty of Waitangi

Just imagine being in the presence of British Representatives, & Maori Chiefs in the year of 1840 for the signing of the Treaty Of Waitangi, you can hear heated debates & discussions between the 2 nations about fighting for the Maori to either your rights or equal rights.  You're stuck on an Island which has no law & no rules & The British are trying to take over the your people and their rights. .As the people of the two nation’s gather to sign the treaty, everyone waits anxiously for peace of there land.

In 1840 there was a lot of conflict between the Maori and the British people. It was caused by loss of land, Murder or theft, but in between all that there were some peace between nations, because they were trader’s ( A converter )which means they could exchange weapons for either anything the natives had.

As the British started coming from britain to New Zealand they started provoking  the Maori people by killing for land or ripping them off. So then it started the beginning of the Treaty, the Treaty of Waitangi. On February the 6th 1840 the Treaty was signed, it was signed by 500 Maori Chief and 13 women Chief signed.

The end of the day 50 Maori chief signatures & 450 British signatures were on the contract. What the contract means to me? I reckon the treaty brought heaps of peace towards the 2 nations, but then after 5 years a war was declared between the 2 nations because Hone Heke brought & cut down the Union Jack.
